Bible Commentary

2 Timothy 1:7 is a famous Bible verse people have used for centuries for comfort and empowerment from God’s Word.

The Bible is full of the promises of God. In order to receive the fullness of those promises, we must seek them out and discover the truth about ourselves. The more we read and study the words of the Bible, the more we understand ourselves and come to the truth about why we act and speak the way we do.

Before we receive the reward of the promise, there must sometimes be a surrender of something we have a hold on that God wants us to release. It is ultimately for our good to let go and let God, but it can be a difficult and painful process.

We can be deeply rooted into the things of the earth. After all, we were born in the world and have been influenced by the world all our lives. God understands that. Because of His deep love for us, there comes a time when He gently begins loosening those deep roots, which can shake our world a bit.

In this way, He gets our attention so that we will seek Him with our whole heart. When we seek the truth, He will reveal it. Many times, it’s something we don’t want to see or accept. But with God’s gentleness and tender ways, we also begin to understand the depth of His love for us and therefore we have the strength to accept the facts and lay them at the feet of Jesus.

Abba Father

The most gentle and nurturing part about the whole process is when God reveals to us why we have developed this “thing” in our hearts. We begin to understand the “why” of what we do.  He becomes Father and Abba to us as we recognize He has been with us and watching us our whole lives. He knows everything that has happened to us.

No matter the failures of our earthly dad, our Heavenly Father can restore and abundantly multiply back to us all the years the locust has eaten. (Joel 2:25). What a beautiful thing as we see the promises of the Bible fulfilled in our own lives.

Then as we go and live our lives and we  are faced with situations that provoke us back to our old behaviors, we can ask God for help.  And when we get that help, we will recognize that it was His Spirit in us that gave us the self-control we asked for.

2 Timothy 1:7

for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

Then we gain confidence that He not only goes before us, but His Spirit lives within us, empowering us to live through Him. And we come to realize we are not alone. He is with us and goes with us wherever we are, today and forevermore.

His faithfulness endures throughout the ages, here on earth and in Heaven. We have a Friend who sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24). He love us. Hallelujah! Thank You, Lord Jesus!! Amen.

Study 2 Timothy 1:7 for realization of the power of God Who lives in you.
