Deuteronomy 28:13 (NKJV)
And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail; you shall be above only, and not be beneath, if you heed the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, and are careful to observe them.
Bible Commentary
Deuteronomy 28:13 is a Bible verse from the Old Testament where God promises specific blessings for observance and obedience of His commands.
For many of us, reading this promise of God feels like a breath of fresh air. It sounds so good, particularly if you can relate to being in a position of “beneath”.
I’m reminded of a movie, A Knight’s Tale, which is set in a historic time period where the people were divided by economic classes—peasants, lords and knights. The peasants were on the bottom rung of the ladder, and they were perceived and treated as such. Unless one was born in a particular family, they had no chance of changing their social status.
Have you ever felt that way? You’ve been on the bottom rung of the ladder, economically, socially or professionally? Jesus was born into a family like that. His mother’s reputation was tarnished because she became pregnant before she was married.

So, he asked a knight from another land to take his son on as a hired hand and allow him to be brought up on his estate, where he would have a much better chance for a more respectable life.
The knight agreed, and father and son said goodbye. Though it was a great sacrifice to give up his son, the father was willing to endure the pain of being separated for his son’s greater good, to “change his stars.”
Have you ever wished you could “change your stars”?
Deuteronomy 28:13 says, “And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail; you shall be above only, and not be beneath, if you heed the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, and are careful to observe them.”
Let’s take a closer look to see how we can claim this promise for our very own.
