John 8:29 (NASB)
And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.
Bible Commentary
John 8:29 is a Bible verse in the New Testament where Jesus is speaking about His standing with His Father.
Everything Jesus did was pleasing to His Father. Since there was no sin to separate Jesus from the presence of God, their fellowship, from God to man, was especially close.
Wouldn’t it be great if we knew everything we did was pleasing to God? We have difficulty even imagining this scenario, since we have so many voices in our minds and from our past, and even those around us, that constantly and forcefully tell us otherwise.
Let’s look more closely at John 8:29. Jesus said that the Father who sent Him is always with Him, and never left Him alone because, “I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.”
God’s continual presence with Jesus almost sounds like a reward for Jesus doing the things that were pleasing to His Father. But let’s look at it a different way.
Unlocking the Truth – One and the Same
Jesus was able to do the things that were pleasing to the Father because His Father was always with Him. John 15:5 says, “…apart from Me you can do nothing.”
It is the same with us. We don’t have to live like we’re walking on eggshells, afraid that what we’re doing, thinking, saying is not pleasing to God or to someone else.
If we have accepted Christ as our Saviour, then He lives in us and is always with us, just like Jesus said in John 8:29. We now reflect the beautiful and pleasing countenance of Christ, inside and out. We have the same benefit as Jesus. The Father is always with us.
It is the devil who constantly accuses us–of not doing enough, of doing too much, of not being enough–thin enough, smart enough, popular enough or just plain good enough. These are the devil’s own insecurities and hangup’s that he reflects onto us. Don’t believe his lies.
In Jesus’ Shoes
Put yourself in Jesus’ shoes. Actually, we already are in His shoes. We are One with Him. Jesus died on the cross for that reason, so we could be where He is, and He could be where we are (John 14:3). That is the beauty of the Holy Spirit. He lives in us.
Because we are in Christ everything we do is pleasing to God the Father. The blood of Christ filters out anything else. The work of our hands and the order of our steps have already been ordained through Jesus Christ. But let me make it very clear. God says to us,
“Good job soldier! I am proud of you.”
May the pleasing countenance of God the Father give us rest, peace and joy, as our likeness is transformed more and more into the image of Jesus Christ.
God the Father is pleased with you and with me. Hallelujah!
