Matthew 6:28-29 (NKJV)
“So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
Bible Commentary
Matthew 6:28-29 is a Bible verse where Jesus is teaching his disciples to trust God to take care of our needs and the things that are important to us.
As human beings, we tend to see the things about ourselves that we would like to change. Maybe slimmer here, or smoother there or thicker there. With the modern day accessibility to cosmetic surgery, there are endless ways we believe we could “improve” upon our physical bodies.
We can compare this beauty phenomena to the recent craze of home-buying. Each of us have our own “style” and as we start house-shopping, we immediately see the things that are not acceptable and what we would want to change if we bought our own fixer-upper.
Maybe it’s the layout, the flooring or the finishes that are not to our liking. The house needs to reflect our own taste and style in order for us to accept it and invest in it.
Let’s stop a moment and compare this method of operation and thinking to that of Jesus Christ.
Jesus the Carpenter
Although Jesus knows about all of our sin and every unflattering thing about us, He accepts us just as we are. Not only does He accept us, but He passionately pursues us because He wants an intimate relationship with each one of us…and not because we are beautiful and we have “fixed up” our mess, but because Father God created us in His image.
Genesis 1:27
So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
We are a reflection of our Heavenly Father and each of us is special and unique because we were made by the hands of a Holy God who created us to have a relationship with Him.
While we strive and struggle to become beautiful in the eyes of man and ourselves, God already sees us as beautiful because we are a reflection of Him. Can we slow down and meditate on the wonder of this? God accepts us. Let’s rest in that knowledge and accept ourselves, and our homes!
John 3:16
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
While we strive to get (or keep) our house up-to-date with the latest finishes and styles to reflect our man-made image of beauty, let’s remember that Jesus was a carpenter by trade and He came to build the temple of God within us.
1 Corinthians 6:19
Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?
Holy Spirit In Us
What an awesome scripture! Our bodies house the Holy Spirit of God. He lives within us and if He lives within our body, then He lives within our home.
He accepts us just the way we are, and He accepts our home just the way it is. And if the Lord of Heaven accepts us, then we can enter into His rest as we accept it, too. Then if a change needs to be made, He will be in the lead and not us. When we surrender to His leadership, it makes things so much better!
Jesus is the Master Carpenter. He doesn’t make mistakes. Believe in Him today and be saved from the strain and struggle of works and man’s definition of perfection. Study Matthew 6:28-29 and let His image of beauty and grace reflect upon you and your home today. Amen.
