Bible Commentary
John 14:3 is one of the most intriguing Bible verses in the New Testament, as Jesus reveals His plans for the future—our future and His.
To understand what Jesus is talking about, let’s look back at the history of Moses and Joshua. After Moses died, God told Joshua to take over and lead the people “to the land which I am giving to them” (Joshua 1:2).
Look at what God said in Joshua 1:5-6, “No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you. 6 Be strong and courageous, for you shall give this people possession of the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.”
Note the word, “possession” in verse 6, which Webster’s dictionary defines as: control or occupancy of property without regard to ownership.
God told them they could have the land, no matter who was currently living there. They were to go in and “possess” the land, take control without regard to the current ownership.
A Promise Realized
This was a realization of the promises of God from Deuteronomy 7:13 which says, “He will love you and bless you and multiply you; He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your new wine and your oil, the increase of your herd and the young of your flock, in the land which He swore to your forefathers to give you.”
If you look at the word “wine” in this verse, the Hebrew meanings are: expulsion, squeezed out, to occupy (driving out previous tenants, and possession in their place).
The promises of God came with an instruction to be courageous in taking that which God said was theirs (Deut. 7:16 and Joshua 1:6).
They had to take it by force, by warfare.
