Bible Commentary

2 Thessalonians 2:8 is a Bible verse in the New Testament where Paul is teaching us how Satan will be destroyed in the last days.

In order to defeat an enemy in a battle of war, you must first know where he is, or where he is going to be. You can’t fight something you can’t see. This is the first order of business we see in 2 Thessalonians 2:8. The lawless one—the devil—will be revealed.

Now is the time. The way we recognize the enemy is by his work, the sound of his lies and the effects that result from believing them. The word “revealed” in the Greek means: to take off the cover, disclose.

Have you ever accepted something as truth and then later discovered it was actually a lie? There is freedom in the truth (John 8:32). Remember, the devil is the father of lies.

It is imperative for each one of us to follow Jesus Christ and read the Bible faithfully, so that the light of His truth will shine on the lies we have believed in our minds, and the darkness can be cleared out.

·         Truth replaces lies.

·         Light replaces darkness.

As we pursue truth, the lies are destroyed and Jesus Christ shines more brightly within us, hence the brightness of His coming. Jesus told his disciples in Luke 17:21, “the kingdom is within you.” The brightness of His coming is within each of us.

Unlocking the Truth – The End of Satan

The biggest lie we as believers have accepted is that we are still under the curse of God from the Garden of Eden. We accept the lies of decay, death and darkness.

Jesus Christ became the curse for us on the cross! Wake up! We don’t live under the curse anymore! The decay and death we see all around us is false evidence. We don’t have to accept that as truth.

2 Thessalonians 2:9-10 says, “The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, 10 and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.”

Satan’s tactics have been powerful. The curse on mankind was also powerful, but God’s mercy is greater. For that reason He sent Jesus Christ. Galatians 3:13 says, “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us…” Jesus defeated death and the curse. (1 Corinthians 15:54).

How is Satan defeated in the last days? 2 Thessalonians 2:8 says, “…whom the Lord will consume with the breath of his mouth…”

·         The Greek meanings for “breath” are: spirit, soul, mental disposition, mind.

·         The Greek meanings of “mouth” are: language, an opening, face.

By the power of the Holy Spirit within us as believers, we have the mind of Christ and therefore the power (mental disposition) to recognize the lies and work of Satan, and cast out the lies and instead stand firm in the truth.

We must also use our language, our mouths, to speak and think the Word of God, which is the sword of the spirit (Ephesians 6:17), our weapon. His mouth is your mouth. The brightness of Jesus Christ is within us.

And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. Study the Bible verse of 2 Thessalonians 2:8 to discover Satan’s tactics and destroy them with the truth of Jesus Christ within you.
