Who is the Holy Spirit-Part Two
Who is the Holy Spirit Part Two
by Jean Bradley
The Holy Spirit is the third person of our Triune God, as we mentioned in Part One, but the question is this: Who is He to you?? John 14:26 says:
‘But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said’.
Jesus is speaking here and again in John 16:13-15 when He says:
‘But when He, the Spirit of Truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.’
Wow, that is amazing and such a privilege to even think that we have the Holy Spirit living in us!! It goes without saying then, that for a person to have the Holy Spirt, we need to be a born-again Child of God! If you have not already been born again, i.e. given your heart and life to Jesus Christ, please click here.
One of the things that has always been so awesome for me, is the way that the Holy Spirit makes the Word of God come alive. The Bible can look like it is a lot of rules and we can lose focus on what we are reading, but with the Holy Spirit within us, it comes alive! For example, when we are reading a passage and we are in need of help and counsel for a problem we might have, the Word will speak directly to us about that issue and we find such a relief to know that God has it covered. The Apostle Paul says in 2 Corinthians 3:4-6 (NLT):
Jesus Made the Way
This is not to say that we should not read the Old Testament, but what Paul is saying here is that in Old Testament times Jesus Christ had not come yet to make a way for the people to be born again and their spirit within them to be renewed. In other words, they did not have the Holy Spirit.
Therefore, all the laws that they had to keep to be right with God were basically impossible. They could keep some of the laws, but definitely not all of them, so they had to sacrifice goats and calves to be cleansed on the outside in order to be acceptable to God, but they were not changed on the inside.
How privileged we are today that we have a Saviour Who sacrificed His perfect self for us–in our place–to be acceptable to God the Father and to be able to have a relationship with Him!! Thank You, Jesus!! So what we have seen here so far is this:
· The Holy Spirit teaches us.
· He makes the Bible come to life.
· He makes the Truth known to us.
I am sure we have been in different situations, where suddenly we feel like something is just not okay. I usually say that my spirit is feeling scratchy, that I am just uneasy about something. That is a warning from the Holy Spirit about something that could mean danger or that the people I am with are not to be trusted. It is always a good idea to listen to that warning; it is always for our good. 1 John 2:27 (NLT) says it like this:
‘But you have received the Holy Spirit, and He lives within you, so you don’t need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what he teaches is true – it is not a lie. So just as He has taught you, remain in fellowship with Christ’.
Unlike a person who has the best intentions toward us, yet is imperfect in their advice for us, the Holy Spirit can always be trusted. After all, He is the Divine Expression of God Himself. There is no greater authority in Heaven or on earth.
Let’s Pray Together: Father God, we come to You in the Name of Your Son, Jesus Christ. We thank You for sending Your Holy Spirit to live within us. We ask Holy Spirit, that You make Yourself known to us. Help us and teach us Your ways and Your truths. Thank You Holy Spirit for being our teacher, our counsellor and our friend. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen!
