Song of Solomon 8:7 Continued

Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.

…says, “…if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.”

We cannot put a price on love. We can’t buy it, work for it, earn it or deserve it. God offers it as a gift. If we could somehow buy His love, that would disturb the purity of the gift.

The very definition of “gift” is: something voluntarily transferred from one person to another without compensation.

Psalm 37:3 says, “Trust in the Lord and do good; Dwell in the land and ^[a]cultivate faithfulness.

The reference for the word “cultivate” is: feed securely or feed on His faithfulness.

Since we are God’s bride (His church), He asks us to be faithful to Him, just as a newlywed groom expects his new bride to be faithful to him. “Feed” from the reference above means: to become nourished or satisfied as if by food.

Emotionally Faithful

God asks us as His bride to feed on His faithfulness, not just with our bodies but also with our minds, our emotions and desires. By our obedience to that command—faithfulness—we are nourished, satisfied and secure. It sounds so simple. However, God knows we have many temptations in this world.

1 Timothy 4:1 says, “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils”.

Since the curse upon the earth, Satan has had some powerful tools at his disposal that he has used to steal, kill and destroy: people, marriages, families and homes. His primary goal is to cause God pain by destroying the marriage between God and His bride, the church.

God’s first and most important commandment to His people is to love Him with all our hearts, all our minds and all our strength (Deuteronomy 6:5). He warns us against idolatry (Exodus 20:3-5), telling us He is a jealous God.

What are Seducing Spirits

Looking closer at Satan’s tool of seducing spirits, the word “seduce” means: to persuade to disobedience or disloyalty. It is very important to note the similarity between the word “idolatry” and “adultery” below:

Idolatry – (disloyalty to God)
Adultery – (disloyalty to God and our spouse)

You see, God is our Husband and our Maker (Isaiah 54:5), and when we are lured away by seducing spirits–either in thoughts, desires, emotions or deeds–we are committing not only idolatry, but adultery. God is no longer first in our hearts, thoughts or desires (Rev 2:4), like He commanded.

So how do we get back: to purity, to faithfulness, to right desires?

Jesus is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6).

The Darkness from the Past

We have all been deeply affected by sexual immorality—either our own or at the hand of someone else. It hides in the dark of our past, our ancestry—those who came before us. Those strongholds hold power while they are in the dark.

But now, the light of Jesus Christ shines in all the dark crevices and corners of our hearts and memories, to clear out the stench and ugliness of Satan’s spirits. Malachi 4:2 says, “But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings.”

Those dark spirits are exposed, so the place they held captive can be healed.

Our hope is in Jesus Christ, who gives us the gift of righteousness, which is sanctification through His Spirit (Isaiah 45:8). We are healed by His stripes (1 Peter 2:24).

Through Christ, every part of us can be cured from every evil affection and wrong desire we’ve ever had. We are free and clean in Him. He can change our hearts’ desires, and our bodies’ affections and desires.

In Him, we can be faithful and righteous—a beautiful and lovely bride who loves her Husband passionately and faithfully. This is Heaven on earth.
