Psalm 1:2 is a Bible verse from the Book of Psalms that illustrates the habits of those who are blessed by the Lord. The Bible, though full of the mysteries of God, has many simple instructions for those who want to be blessed by God.
Any pattern of behavior or action will produce some form of result. It only makes sense that if you want good results, you need to follow a pattern of behavior and action that will produce the results you seek.
The first part Psalm 1:2 says, “But his delight is in the law of the Lord…” A very important notation are the Hebrew meanings of “delight,” which are: pleasure, desire, matter, purpose.
Not only should we take pleasure in the law of the Lord—the Bible—but it should also be our purpose. We all want to know our lives have meaning and purpose, and Jesus said in John 15:5 that we can do nothing apart from Him. Our purpose of life is in Him. He created us.
So what if we don’t have a desire to read the Bible, and we don’t delight in it? Will the Lord not bless us?
Unlocking the Truth – Jesus is the Door
It has been my experience that when I recognize a wrong desire (or the absence of a right one), I look up to God for help. He is the only One Who can transform the desires of our hearts—from the sinful nature of our flesh to the holy nature of Jesus Christ.
It takes courage to face the truth of wrong desires in our heart. We are used to hiding them–from God, from others and even from ourselves.
But when we courageously look at the truth openly with Christ, it is there we find healing and freedom.
The beauty of righteousness is just beyond the door of truth. Jesus is the door, and He is the truth. Be brave enough to get past the rough stuff. He walks through it with you.
Our salvation goes beyond the moment we accepted Christ into our heart. It is ongoing—a work in progress. As a follower of Jesus Christ, you are being changed into His image from glory to glory (2 Corinthians 3:18).
There is great joy in the liberating freedom of healing and rightness. The holiness of righteousness comes into the empty place where the darkness of sinful desires were cleared out and replaces the darkness, the wounds, with healing and light.
Your soul can feel fresh and clean—whole. That is the effect of righteousness, and this is what makes a person feel beautiful.
There is great joy in righteousness. When you experience this kind of healing in your soul, you’ll not only delight in the law of the Lord, but you’ll be running back to it every day for more!
The last part of Psalm 1:2 says, “And in His law he meditates day and night.” The word “law” has some fascinating Hebrew meanings: precept or statute; to flow as water, to rain, to throw (especially an arrow, to shoot), to point out, to teach.
As I mentioned before, we find our purpose in the Bible—the law of the Lord. As we discover the gifts He has given us, we find that they are used to lead, influence or teach others in some capacity.
This is how the law of the Lord flows like water. As you practice receiving from the Lord, you become a natural spring that flows out, as well.
John 7:38 says, “He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
The words “day and night” in Psalm 1:2 point to this very thing. You receive the truth in and live the Word out through the channels God has gifted you with—day and night.
