Luke 4:4 is a statement made by Jesus Christ in response to the devil’s temptation of food at a time when Jesus was hungry after a 40 day fast. It is fascinating that these words of Jesus are the first recorded words by Him as an adult in the Book of Luke. In the preceding paragraphs, the Bible tells us that Jesus began His ministry when he was 30 years old. And yet the first recorded words He spoke after His baptism were not to man, but to the devil.

He had to confront temptation, just as man does, and conquer it. He did just that as He spoke the written Word of God back to the devil. Not only did He speak the Words of God, but He believed and obeyed the words.

He did not partake of the bread the devil offered even though He was hungry, but He denied His flesh and covered Himself with the wings of God the Father by partaking of the truth and power of His Words.

What an example!

Take Cover Under His Wings

As we face temptations in our daily life, let’s use them as an opportunity to follow the same example.

1) Deny the flesh—whatever it is we’re hungry for.

2) Speak the written Word of God, believing it.

3) Obey the Word of God.

In doing so, we take cover under the power and shelter of God’s wings (Psalm 91:1).

Let’s practice living in the victory of Jesus Christ by using the Word of God–our shield of faith. We can more effectively minister to others having built our faith muscles–learning to depend not on the things of the world, but on God alone.
