Ezekiel 9:9 (NKJV)
Then He said to me, “The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great, and the land is full of bloodshed, and the city full of perversity; for they say, ‘The Lord has forsaken the land, and the Lord does not see!’
Bible Commentary
Ezekiel 9:9 is a Bible verse in the Old Testament where God is speaking through the prophet Ezekiel, acknowledging that He indeed sees violence and perversion in the land. This is a chilling statement made by God, for we most certainly live with violence in the land and perversion in our cities today. Though many people discount a Divine Creator, and/or disregard the possibility of judgement, the time is drawing near.
Let’s see what iniquity means in the first part of Ezekiel 9:9. The Hebrew meanings are: perversity, evil, sin, do amiss, make crooked, do wrong.
In today’s society, “wrong” means different things to different people. What some people think is wrong is right to others, and vice versa. The only absolute truth is in the Bible—God’s Holy Word.
He made available to us His written instructions on how to live our lives, a protection from the pitfalls of this world, but so many people ignore it or don’t believe it. What a pity.
How different someone’s life can be by accepting and following God’s Word! We forfeit so many gifts and blessings because of our stubborn refusal to look His way and believe Him.
Look at what God says about His observance of evil in the land. He says in Ezekiel 9:9 it is not only great—but exceedingly great. It is all around us and multiplying like an epidemic. As parents, we fear for our children’s safety even at school, not just because of gun violence, but because of the influence of depraved minds–adults and youth alike.
Unlocking the Truth – Difficult Times
2 Timothy 3:1-4 says this,
“But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. 2 For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good,4 treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,”
It breaks God’s heart to be so rejected by men, His children whom He created for relationship with Himself. What if His patience and longsuffering eventually comes to an end? Look at the verse immediately after Ezekiel 9:9, when God says “But as for Me, My eye will have no pity nor will I spare, but I will bring their conduct upon their heads.”
He will hold us accountable for what we have done here on earth. That’s why it is so important to reconcile with God through Jesus Christ, our Saviour. If you don’t know Jesus as your Saviour and Friend, take a moment to look up to Him in prayer and ask forgiveness of your sins. The Holy Spirit will come into your heart and rescue you from God’s judgement and you will be saved.
In Ezekiel 9:9, the people were assuming that just because they had not seen a great manifestation of God’s judgement, that He must not see the evil, or He had forsaken them altogether. But God does see everything we do and hears every intent of our heart.
Saved from God’s Judgment
2 Peter 3:9 says, “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”
God gives us opportunity after opportunity to repent, to turn from our evil ways so He can save us from His judgement. But there is a time when those opportunities come to an end. Psalm 78:66 says, “And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach.”
This is a good old-fashioned spanking, but more than that He puts a lasting shame upon those who reject Jesus Christ, and counts them His enemies. The punishment of God is very real. None of us want to endure the physical, emotional and psychological distress of His judgement.
