Psalm 36:9 (NKJV)
For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light.
Bible Commentary
Psalm 36:9 is a Bible verse in the Book of Psalms where King David is praising God by describing one of His attributes.
King David knew God well. David had walked closely with God from the time he was very young tending sheep out in the field. David described God as the fountain of life.
The word “fountain” has some interesting Hebrew meanings. Among them are: source of water, even when naturally flowing, also of tears; blood.
God is the source of all life. He created life and made the way of provision for everything that He created (Genesis 1).
Of those definitions, “source of water” is listed first, and of course water is a basic need to sustain life. God is the source of all our basic needs for life. But interestingly, the next definition listed is “tears,” which might indicate God’s tears from a broken heart resulting from the rebellion of His bride, His people.
Next is “blood,” which He shed for us through Jesus Christ, His Son, to restore mankind back to Himself. God is the source, or the fountain of life and the Sustainer of life.
Spiritual Enlightenment
Psalm 36:9 also says “in Your light we see light.” Let’s look at the word “light”.
The first Hebrew meaning for this word is: illumination. In Webster’s dictionary, “illumination” means: spiritual or intellectual enlightenment.
When we are knowingly in the Presence of God, we are in His light. In His Presence, still and quiet, we are spiritually and/or intellectually enlightened because we are focused on Him and His Word, the Bible.
He is omnipresent (Psalm 139:1), so He is with us all the time, but we aren’t always aware of His Presence because we are not focused on God. Most likely, we are focused on another person or ourselves. We all want a close intimate relationship in our lives, to enjoy the companionship of a special person who loves us, a partner in life.
God made us to need one other, but the only permanent satisfaction and fulfillment for our soul is not in a man or woman—a human relationship—but in Jesus Christ.
Go Deep with Christ
We can have a Holy Matrimony, a God-filled (Spirit-filled) marriage with another person, but we must first seek Christ to deepen our relationship with Him.
Then, in His light we begin to see and understand many things about others that we would not have known without that spiritual enlightenment.
If you are already married, you also must go deeper in your knowledge of God to transform your marriage into a Holy Matrimony. With new spiritual enlightenment from the Presence of God, you will begin to understand things about yourself and about your spouse that you didn’t see before.
Resist the urge to try and change your spouse, by making them read the Bible or manipulating them into becoming who you think they should be.
Only God can change a person, so as we work on OUR relationship with God, He will work on our spouse. Be patient; this takes time, but it is well worth the wait.
