Bible Commentary
Luke 18:8 is a Bible verse from the New Testament where Jesus is assuring us that when God vindicates his elect, he will do it swiftly. It is sweet music to our ears that God will act quickly to avenge those of us who believe Him.
Is there a particular situation or relationship you have waited for an excruciatingly long time to receive vindication over? Maybe someone accused you of something you didn’t do, and it tarnished your reputation.
Maybe someone with authority over you continually breaks rules, regulations or laws, but always seems to get away with it. Or, it could be a financial scenario that always seems to have you at the bottom and an immoral person at the top.
Whatever it is, God sees it. He knows what it is and who it is that has mistreated us, and He will avenge us, His soldiers in Christ. God has a special affinity for those who believe Him and who fear His name. We are the apple of His eye (Zechariah 2:8).
To Be Vindicated
Let’s look at the parable Jesus tells in Luke 18:1-8.
And he told them a parable, to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. 2 He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor regarded man; 3 and there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Vindicate me against my adversary.’ 4 For a while he refused; but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor regard man, 5 yet because this widow bothers me, I will vindicate her, or she will wear me out by her continual coming.’” 6 And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. 7 And will not God vindicate his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? 8 I tell you, he will vindicate them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of man comes, will he find faith on earth?”
The word “vindicate” is defined as: clear from criticism, blame; to defend against opposition; to justify.
The widow was persistent in her request to the judge. When the judge refused or didn’t act at all, she came back and asked again. We don’t know how many times she came, but verse 3 says “she kept coming” and verse 5 says “her continual coming.”
Have you been persistent in your prayers to God about something? He hears us and He sees our situation. Most likely, He has already been at work in the spiritual realm, so that He can unleash a great manifestation of Himself in our situation. Not only will we be justified, but He will be glorified. Hallelujah!
The Heart of God
The remainder of Luke 18:8 is a bit sad. It ends with “Nevertheless, when the Son of man comes, will he find faith on earth?”
“Faith” in the Greek means: persuasion, credence, moral conviction (of the truthfulness of God), reliance upon Christ for salvation, fidelity.
God the Father is faithful to vindicate us as we request, but what about Him? Will He find faithfulness among us when He comes?
He desires all of us to come to repentance, so that none of us will perish (2 Peter 3:9). There is anguish in His heart because there are many who refuse Him, reject Him or disregard Him altogether.
May He find us faithful when He comes. Praise the Lord for Jesus Christ, His Son and for the cross He lovingly endured for us. Study the Bible verse of Luke 18:8, and revive your hope of God’s swift justification on earth.
