Joel 2:21 is a Bible verse from the Old Testament that gives us reason to rejoice in the Lord. Let’s first look specifically at who this verse is talking to. Earlier in the chapter in Joel 2:18 it says, “Then the Lord will be zealous for His land, And pity His people.”

His people are those who have called upon the Name of the Lord, those who fear Him and walk with Him—those who know Jesus Christ as Savior. Of particular interest is one of the Hebrew meanings of “land,” which is: husband.

In Webster’s dictionary, “husband” means: 1) married man, 2) manage economically; conserve.

Ephesians 5:23 says that the husband is head of the wife as Christ is head of the church. As such, the husband is responsible for the overall economic management of his house. The wife is the household manager, overseeing the day-to-day activities and needs of the home, but the husband is head over all, and the Lord holds him responsible.

Fear Not

The first part of Joel 2:21 says Fear not, O land. We know that fear possesses a component of torment. 1 John 4:18 says, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment.”

I’m quite certain that many, many husbands have feared about the economic well-being of their home, but God says to them, Fear not, O land.

The word “torment” in the Bible many times refers to a demonic place or spirit, and even Hell itself. We know God does not want this for His children. He wants the absolute best for us. He wants Heaven on earth for us. That’s why He sent His Son.
