Bible Commentary
Hebrews 9:14 is a Bible verse in the New Testament that discusses the power of the blood of Christ, which cleanses us from dead works so that we can serve God with meaningful work.
As believers, we have only scratched the surface of what has been made available to us through the power of Jesus’ blood. There are many promises of God in the Bible which are in plain sight to the reader, but many more which can be uncovered by going deeper into the Word.
Hebrews 9:14 is one such Bible verse. First of all, what does the Apostle Paul mean by “dead works”?
Have you ever invested a lot of time and effort, and maybe even money into something expecting a certain result, but it turned out to be in vain? The goal wasn’t reached, your time and money seemed to be wasted and your work was all for nothing? That is a good example of “dead works”. Bear in mind Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”
God has a purpose in it, but it can be quite frustrating and discouraging. If nothing else, maybe God’s plan is to get our attention so we’ll look up to Him and seek success and victory His way.
The Power of the Blood
In Old Testament times, the priest had to use the blood of goats and bulls to offer as a sacrifice for his sins and for the sins of the people. Read Hebrews 9:13-14 together,
“For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”
