Matthew 5:6 (NKJV)
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.
Bible Commentary
Matthew 5:6 is a Bible verse from Jesus’ famous Sermon on the Mount that carries an exciting promise.
The word “righteousness” to many people carries a certain air of “churchiness”. If you are a church-goer, it’s fine, but if you’re not, well that word can be a turn-off. From the world’s point of view, we church people can seem judgmental and condemning. The phrase “righteous indignation” comes to mind.
But if you’ve walked closely with Jesus Christ for a time, you get a clearer picture of the truth about the word righteousness and we come to learn how important it is to Him.
At some point in our lives, we must make a decision whether or not to please the world (people), or please God our Father. We must choose to either align ourselves with the world, or with God.
Righteousness is a choice.
Joshua put a critical decision in front of the children of Israel in Joshua 24:15,
“And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Matthew 5:6 gives us a clear understanding that God wants our desires to be in line with His Own.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.”
Though we want to please God and live our lives for Christ, it doesn’t mean we instantly want the same things He does. So how do we change our desires? There could be things in our lives that we don’t even know if they are pleasing to Him or not. So how do we know?
Jesus is the Answer
For me, the answer to every question is in Jesus Christ. He is everything we need. He hears our every prayer, so let’s pray! Call out to Him!
Do you need a heart change? Jesus is the answer.
Do you need a settled and peaceful spirit? Jesus is the answer.
Do you need help with a decision? Jesus is the answer.
Invite Him into the situation first, instead of seeking answers everywhere else. Sometimes the only time we look up to Him is when we’re not getting the answers we want from people.
We must choose Him first. That in itself is the essence of righteousness. That’s how we love Him with all our hearts, all our souls and all our minds as He commanded in Deuteronomy 6:5. Remember, the reward in Matthew 5:6 is for hungering and thirsting after righteousness, not for being righteous. The longer we walk with Christ, the more we begin to take on His attributes and His desires.
We must simply seek Him first.
He is the only One Who fills us up with a permanent contentment and enjoyment. Nothing else lasts. If Christ isn’t in it, “it” turns out to be empty and vain. Jesus said in Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
Discover the joy of being one with the heart of Christ. Enjoy the journey. He is with you all the way. Study the Bible verse of Matthew 5:6 to know the desires of righteousness in Jesus Christ.
