Bible Commentary

Malachi 3:6 is a Bible verse from the Old Testament which is a sobering reminder that the only reason we are not consumed of God is because of His mercy toward us.

Much of Malachi 3 is a chilling eye-opener that while God is a merciful and loving God, He also judges His people whom He created. Let’s continue past Malachi 3:6 and look at verse 7.

“Yet from the days of your fathers You have gone away from My ordinances And have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you,” Says the Lord of hosts.”

There was a time when our dad here on earth had had enough of our rebellion. That’s when the belt came out and the serious discipline began. It is the same with our Father in Heaven, Who also disciplines us.

What is serious discipline, and who will He discipline? Malachi 3:5 gives us more detail when it says,

“And I will come near you for judgment; I will be a swift witness Against sorcerers, Against adulterers, Against perjurers, Against those who exploit wage earners and widows and orphans, And against those who turn away an alien— Because they do not fear Me,” Says the Lord of hosts.”

To sum it all up, those who do not fear God are those who are most susceptible. Make no mistake, all of us have sinned. If it weren’t for Jesus Christ, we would all be held accountable and seen as guilty before God.

God’s Wrath was Satisfied

Look again at Malachi 3:6

“For I am the Lord, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.”

All of God’s great and fierce wrath at our sin was focused like a laser beam upon the body and soul of Jesus Christ on the cross. Jesus became sin. God’s wrath was satisfied.

Isaiah 53:10 says, “Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief.”

That is who the Lord is—both God the Father and Jesus Christ the Son. Their love for us outweighed all the disappointment and anger over our failures and our rebellion.

Their great compassion and love does not fail, does not weaken and does not lapse.

James 2:13 says, “Mercy triumphs over judgement.”

The cross is proof. When we accepted Jesus Christ as Lord, we “returned to Him” (Malachi 3:7).

Unlocking the Truth – God’s Inner Circle

When we returned to Him, we became part of God’s great inner circle. We are the bride of Christ, the church. Look at this fascinating statement about those of us in His inner circle.

Malachi 3:16-18

“Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another, And the Lord listened and heard them; So a book of remembrance was written before Him For those who fear the Lord And who meditate on His name.

17 “They shall be Mine,” says the Lord of hosts, “On the day that I make them My jewels. And I will spare them As a man spares his own son who serves him.” 18 Then you shall again discern Between the righteous and the wicked, Between one who serves God And one who does not serve Him.”

Praise God for His unchanging love!

Because of His mercies we are in His book of remembrance. Because of His mercies He calls us His own. Because of His mercies He makes us His jewels, His special treasure. Because of His mercies He spares us like a son who serves his father, and we will see with great clarity of truth.

Study the Bible verse of Malachi 3:6 and remember it is only by Jesus Christ, the Son of God, that we are not consumed.
