2 Timothy 1:9
who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity
Are You Truly Saved?
Sermon on 2 Timothy 1:9 by Charles Moore
Have you ever doubted your salvation?
I have heard preachers say “if you don’t know the exact day, time and place you were saved, then you better check your salvation.”
Or
“If your life didn’t immediately change, then you might not be saved.”
Hearing those things made me doubt my salvation.
I was saved at the age 14 in the summer of 1978 at Falls Creek Church Camp in Oklahoma. But I sure can’t tell you the exact day or time.
What I can tell you is my life did NOT immediately change!
It was years before I completely surrendered my life to the Lord and started following Him.
So, hearing those things as a young adult, made me question whether or not I was saved.
Satan has many tools at his disposal and he is a master at using the right tool at the right time. He loves to tell us lies.
Satan’s Lie: You can’t be saved
- You keep sinning
- You’re not good enough
- You don’t read your Bible enough
- You’re not praying enough
- You’re not serving enough
There is one thing I know from my walk with the Lord and that is; If Satan is telling you something, most of the time it is the Complete opposite of what God is telling you.
The problem is Satan often screams these things at us, while God whispers them to us.
Instead of focusing on Satan’s lies, let’s look at God’s Truth!
2 Timothy 1:9 (NASB) who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity
This one verse completely destroys Satan’s lies.
God Saved us on Purpose
Let’s break down 2 Timothy 1:9 and look at God’s truth.
who has saved us – if you look at the last part of 2 Timothy 1:8 it says “the power of God,”
It’s the power of God who has saved us. To think we have power to save ourselves, is like saying we are a substitute for Jesus.
and called us with a holy calling – The only part we have in our salvation is answering His holy call. We have to ask for it. That’s it!
Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
not according to our works – Not our power. Not our doing. Not our perfectness.
but according to His own purpose – This is why God called us. It wasn’t because we did a mighty thing, or that we had become a spiritual Superman. It was because He wanted to…He saved us on purpose!
and grace – Salvation was God’s grace, His mercy, His love, His gift to us.
which was granted us – He transferred His grace upon us.
in Christ Jesus from all eternity – God’s perfect and complete plan of salvation came together through Christ Jesus and it lasts forever.
There is nothing we can do to earn salvation, except to ask. And it lasts for an eternity.
