Bible Commentary
2 Corinthians 2:14 is a Bible verse in the New Testament where Paul is reminding us of God’s goodness in leading us to victory in Christ, no matter where we are. In this letter to the Corinthians, Paul is addressing the church who had banished a member from their community because of sexual immorality.
Though they had followed Paul’s instructions of punishment by censuring him from the church, they were to now forgive him and receive him back into their communion, so the offender would not “be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow” (2 Corinthians 2:7).
Paul stated that the discipline was sufficient as it had brought forth a sorrow of repentance (2 Corinthians 2:6). Paul also reminds us that all of us need forgiveness, and that any lingering condemnation causes division, which is Satan’s scheme toward us.
Anything that causes division between people is a device of the devil, and we must recognize the tools he uses to stir anger in the hearts of men, be aware of his devices and overcome them through Christ with mercy and forgiveness.
Paul is thanking God in 2 Corinthians 2:14, “who always leads us in triumph in Christ.” No matter how evil the crime (whether we committed it or it was committed against us), mercy and forgiveness can be found in Jesus Christ.
Unlocking the Truth – Mercy and Forgiveness
Jesus took every bit of the ugly, evil sin that man has ever committed or will ever commit—a burden too heavy and massive for us to comprehend—upon His own body on the cross. All the anguish and pain He felt, in His mind, body and soul—was punishment enough for you and for me.
His mercy is like a giant, immovable rock that cannot be washed away, no matter how hard the waves beat against it. His grace is sufficient for us (2 Corinthians 12:9), no matter what we’ve done or how many times we’ve done it. Paul also says in 2 Corinthians 2:5 that God, “manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place.”
When we finally let go of the offense and receive His mercy and forgiveness, He manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place. When you receive His grace into your heart and life and forgive yourself, then you can shine like a light for others who may be in a dark place.
It’s like walking into a house where fresh, chocolate-chip cookies are being baked, and the sweet aroma fills every room. When the mercy of Jesus Christ has filled you, healed your heart, His love light shines through you for others to see.
Just as He drew you out of a muddy pit, so you can draw others out through Christ!
But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place (2 Corinthians 2:14).
No matter where you are, you can shine in Christ and be a beacon of light and hope to someone else. Study the Bible verse of 2 Corinthians 2:14, and let the sweet aroma of the love of Christ beckon others home.
