Psalm 24:7 is a Bible verse from the Old Testament that describes the grand entrance of the King of glory. The Word of God is full of symbolism, and Psalm 24:7 is a good example of that. The mysteries of God’s Word can be unraveled sometimes by simply studying and meditating on it.

God knows it takes time and effort to do that, and He is delighted when His children slow down long enough to seek Him and drink in His Word. This is a fascinating study. It appears as though the Psalmist is instructing the gates to lift up their heads. We know the word “gate” is an opening, or a door. Hebrew meanings are: gate keeper; to estimate; think.

There is a phrase in Nehemiah 3:20, which references a “keeper of the east gate”. It says, “After them Zadok the son of Immer made repairs in front of his own house. After him Shemaiah the son of Shechaniah, the keeper of the East Gate, made repairs.”

Many of us know Nehemiah as the one who had a passion to rebuild the gate around Jerusalem, which had been destroyed by war. Nehemiah wept over the broken state of Jerusalem and acknowledged Israel’s sins before God. He then prayed God’s own promise back to Him in Nehemiah 1:9,

“but if you return to Me, and keep My commandments and do them, though some of you were cast out to the farthest part of the heavens, yet I will gather them from there, and bring them to the place which I have chosen as a dwelling for My name.’

God granted his request and he was allowed to go to Judah and initiate a movement among the surviving Jews there to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem.

The Church Rises

We can see a similar state of affairs among God’s people today. The bride of Christ, the church, is persecuted and considered a reproach just as Jerusalem was in Nehemiah’s day. And yet we find hope in Psalm 24:7 when God instructs us, “Lift up your heads, O you gates! And be lifted up, you everlasting doors!”

The Hebrew meanings of “heads” are: band, beginning, captain, chief, company, principal, ruler, sum and top.

It is apparent He is talking about leaders. Ephesians 5:23 says, “For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.”

Just as Zadok in Nehemiah 3:29 made repairs in front of his own house before commencing with the building of the city wall, so God’s leadership in His house must first be ordered and established, and then the wall around His nation is restored.

As husbands are strengthened and rise up according to God’s appointed order as leaders, the gates around our homes (our children) and our nation are established, secured and settled. See 1 Peter 5:10.

Unlocking the Truth – Son Rise

Nehemiah 3:29 specifically referenced the east gate. This is of course where the sun rises, which is the Hebrew meaning of “East”: sunrise.

Jesus Christ is referenced in multiple places in the Bible as Son, Sun and the Bright Morning Star. Very fitting, since the last part of Psalm 24:7 says, “And the King of glory shall come in.”

The second line of Psalm 24:7, “And be lifted up, you everlasting doors!” is also a reference to Jesus Christ. Jesus said in John 10:7, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.”

In John 10:9 Jesus said, “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.”

As Jesus rebuilds the tabernacle of His people, He is building and restoring the city gates of His nation, as well. He is preparing His bride to receive Him.

Psalm 24:7 Lift up your heads, O you gates! And be lifted up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in.
