Isaiah 45:8 (ESV)

Shower, O heavens, from above,  and let the clouds rain down righteousness; let the earth open, that salvation and righteousness may bear fruit; let the earth cause them both to sprout;  I the Lord have created it.

Bible Commentary

Isaiah 45:8 is a Bible verse in the Old Testament where God in His sovereign power showers His people with the righteousness from Heaven. This is a very intriguing verse and one filled with the riches of God’s promises from Heaven.

We usually associate Heaven with the afterlife, a wonderful and beautiful place we get to live after our time here on earth. However, Isaiah 45:8 declares the showers of heavens raining down its righteousness on earth.

Righteousness in Hebrew means: the right (natural, moral or legal), equity or prosperity. Note that He commands the earth to open, so that salvation and righteousness may bear fruit.

“Earth” in Hebrew means: to be firm, a land, country, field, ground, land, nations, wilderness, world.

In order for a gift exchange to take place, there must be a giver and a receiver. If there is not a willing receiver, the gift has no place to bear fruit.

Heaven’s Showers

When the earth (country, nation, world) opens up to receive the gift, there is a place for the gift to go and bear fruit. Like a seed planted in fertile soil, the seed is the gift and the soil is the receiver. It takes both for the seed to sprout.

In Isaiah 45:8, God declares the earth will open up to receive, and make salvation and righteousness sprout, or grow. Salvation in Hebrew means: liberty, deliverance, prosperity, safety.

God declares what He is giving, where it is going and why.

We, His people, have opened up our hearts and received Jesus Christ from Heaven, God’s gift of salvation and righteousness. We, as the soil, and God as the giver, together cause these gifts to sprout and fill the earth with the sweet aroma of liberty, prosperity and safety.

Sprout means to grow. When Christ, the power from Heaven, rises through His people, there is no stopping salvation and righteousness from growing and filling the whole earth.

God finishes Isaiah 45:8 with, “I the Lord have created it.” It is His sovereign power that makes it so, not man or the wealth and power of nations, but God alone.

Study the Bible verse of Isaiah 45:8 to know Jesus Christ is the healing light from Heaven, God’s greatest gift and blessing to the whole world (John 3:16).
