Psalm 119:114 (NKJV)
You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in Your word.
Bible Commentary
Psalm 119:114 is a Bible verse from the Old Testament where King David professes God as his place of safety and the Word of God as his hope. As a Christian, you have probably experienced the peace of God in your life. There is nothing like it. The peace of God can calm our nerves faster than anything in this world.
His peace that passes all understanding is far better than anything else we might seek for some relief–a hot bath, a glass of wine or whatever kind of entertainment we use to take our minds away.
Amid the constant barrage of bad news that seems to surround us, our minds and our nerves need to take cover. King David took cover in God. His hope was in God’s Word.
Psalm 119:114 You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in Your word.
From the vast amount of songs David wrote praising the Lord and His word, it is easy to see he was in love with God, but he also loved God’s Word.
He meditated on it continually. He took it with him when he was out in the field, facing battle or at home. It was in his heart. He absorbed God’s Word—soaked it in.
The Force of Faith
David faced many battles during his lifetime, just as you and I do—only a different kind. We are soldiers of Christ and we are in a spiritual battle every day. We need cover. We need a shield.
God is a shield. His Word is available to us, but we must make the choice to pursue Him and to pursue His Word. The strongest shield in the world does absolutely no good if we don’t pick it up and use it.
Think of Captain America. His shield is his armor and his weapon. He keeps it with him. It’s almost a part of him. With his shield, he is strong, confident and valiant.
We can be strong, confident and valiant too. Our shield is God and our sword is His Word. With it, we fight and conquer Satan and his armies. With it hidden in our hearts, we can pull it out anytime and wield it against an attack.
Psalm 119:114 You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in Your word.
Praying with Confidence
When we know who we are in Jesus Christ, the power of His blood and the sword of the Spirit—the Word of God—is all we need to defend ourselves and our loved ones. With it, we can pray in confidence.
Stand your ground and take the things of the kingdom. Speak the Word in confidence and with the authority of Jesus Christ. Matthew 11:12 says, “…the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force.”
We must be soldiers of Jesus Christ and fight the armies of Satan with the Word of God in the authority of Christ. We must move forward and occupy the kingdom He has given to us. Matthew 6:33 says, “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
Let’s not stand still, but fight for what is ours in Christ! Push Satan back with the power of the Holy Spirit and the truth of God’s Word. The devil cannot defeat those of us in Christ.
Christ has already won the victory. All we need to do is believe it and lay hold of it with force–the force of faith.
