Bible Commentary
Isaiah 58:8 is a Bible verse from the Old Testament where God promises healing and a breakthrough of the glory of the Lord. If you read the 58th chapter of Isaiah, you can see this is a promise specifically noted as a reward for proper fasting, or in other words, fasting God’s way.
The common understanding of fasting is sacrificing food for a specific period of time. In place of the time and attention given to food, we instead focus that time and attention upon the Lord—prayer and studying the Bible.
The people’s argument in Isaiah 58 is that they had been fasting, but they didn’t see God responding. Let’s look at why. God reveals that He is more interested in our attitude behind our fasting than the act of fasting, when He uncovers the truth in their hearts in Isaiah 58:3-4:
“In fact, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, And exploit all your laborers. 4 Indeed you fast for strife and debate, And to strike with the fist of wickedness.

God has a much different goal in mind.
Isaiah 58:6-7 “Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh?
