Isaiah 49:13 (NKJV)
Sing, O heavens! Be joyful, O earth! And break out in singing, O mountains! For the Lord has comforted His people, And will have mercy on His afflicted.
Bible Commentary
Isaiah 49:13 personifies creation as the Lord pours out His comfort and mercy in this Bible verse.
There is a time for rejoicing, and as the coming of Christ draws nearer, a great outpouring of His mercy and comfort is among us even now. God is the Creator of heavens and all the earth, and His life dwells in everything He created.
It is no wonder then that even the mountains can break out in singing as Isaiah 49:13 instructs.
Do you remember when the disciples got the colt for the Lord to ride into Jerusalem? The disciples threw their own clothes on the colt and they sat Jesus on him, and as He went, many people spread their clothes on the road. (Luke 19:35-36) Take a look at what happened next in Luke 19:37-40.
37 Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen, 38 saying:
“‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
39 And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.”
40 But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.”
The stones would cry out?! Wow, can you just imagine it? That is the power of the greatness of our God. And likewise there is power in true worship of the Lord.
Comfort of the Lord
True worship is in essence a Holy Communion with the Lord and with others, a heavenly prayer language. Spiritual gifts are given, received and shared in Holy Matrimony with the Lord. Isaiah 49:13 describes why even the heavens, the earth and the mountains have reason to break out in singing and rejoicing.
Sing, O heavens! Be joyful, O earth! And break out in singing, O mountains! For the Lord has comforted His people, And will have mercy on His afflicted.
Note the past tense of the verb, “the Lord has comforted His people.” Jesus said in John 14:16, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever;”
Let us continually seek the Comforter–the Holy Spirit Who lives in us. This is the source of our strength, peace and comfort. We must focus on Him instead of our difficulty. Let’s focus on Him and not the things in the world.
Stay in continual communion with Him throughout the day. We don’t have to formulate words in our minds. He understands our thoughts and our groanings. Direct them to Him and then expect a response. He is our Father, and He delights when we turn to Him.
The Lord Saves from Oppression
Acts 7:34 says, “I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt; I have heard their groaning and have come down to deliver them.”
There is a time when the Lord is silent, even though He is always present with us, and there is a time when He responds in ways we can see and/or understand.
The last line of Isaiah 49:13 says the Lord “will have mercy on His afflicted.”
This is the help we can expect when we turn to Him. He grants us mercy when we cry out to Him. In this filthy and wicked world we live in, we desperately need His mercy.
His mercy poured out is like a nice cool shower after working out in the blazing heat. It is like the sound of the river stream over the traffic noise of the city. It is like the encouraging touch of a gentle pat on your shoulder after a stinging disappointment.
His mercy is like a warm smile from a stranger for no apparent reason. It is the spontaneous act of kindness from a friend. It is your pet’s excitement to see you when you walk through the door after a hard day. It is the gentle breeze bringing the pleasing aroma of honeysuckle to your nose.
Sing, O heavens! Be joyful, O earth! Let us break out in singing, brothers and sisters, for the Lord has comforted His people, and He will have mercy on His afflicted.
