5 Steps to God’s Plan for Our Life

Sermon by Charles G. Moore

As Christians, we know God has a plan for our life. Some are searching for that plan, while others are living it. Whether you are searching or fully aware of God’s plan, I would say that none of us are completely living in His plan.

Today I want to look at 5 Steps to God’s Plan for Our Life.

Step 1: Forget your past and look toward the future God has planned for you

We can’t move forward if we are always looking back. Many times, our past becomes an anchor, not allowing us to move ahead. Instead of worrying about what is behind us, let’s use our past experiences as a catapult that launches into the future that God has planned for us.

Philippians 3:13 Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead

Step 2: God wants YOU to affect generations

God’s plans are never small. He thinks so much bigger than we can imagine. Your calling is not just for the here and now. It’s for generations to come.

We may never know why God is having us do certain things. No matter how insignificant it may seem, we can’t fathom the ultimate outcome. Even the simplest things, under God’s power and authority can change the world.

Psalm 112:1-2 Praise the Lord! How blessed is the man who fears the Lord, Who greatly delights in His commandments. His descendants will be mighty on earth; The generation of the upright will be blessed.

Step 3: God wants to increase our territory

God doesn’t want to just bless you. He wants to bless others through you.

1 Chronicles 4:10 Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request.

Jabez wanted to succeed and expand his reach for God. His prayer is short, but so powerful. We can learn a lot from Jabez when it comes to how we should approach God’s plan for our life.

  1. Passion: Jabez cried out to God. He didn’t simply ask God for help, he cried out for it. We must be passionate about our calling.
  2. God is responsible for the success: that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! We are not responsible for the outcome of God’s plan; we are responsible for the work.
  3. With action comes opposition: Let your hand be with me and keep me from harm. Jim Rohn said, “Would we call it a touchdown if there weren’t 300-pound linemen out there trying to tackle you?” When we are working God’s plan, Satan is going to come after us in every way possible. We must continually ask God for His protection.
  4. Key to success – God: And God granted his request. As simple as that seems, we often forget to include God in what we are doing. We get so busy working, that we forget that it is God who is the author and the finisher…not us!

Step 4: God’s got your back

God will not assign your calling, then leave you. God promises that He will be there for strength, protection and guidance.

Isaiah 41:10 Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.

We will have times of deep valleys, where nothing seems to be going right and everything is caving in on us. But God gives us a command and a promise – Do not fear, for I am with you.

Step 5: God wants to grow you

God’s plan can be terrifying! It can be so far out of our comfort zone, that it paralyzes us with fear.

This is when we have to stand on His promises. He wants to grow us and to prosper us.

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.

We can confidently embrace God’s plan for our lives knowing that He is in control and that He will equip us for our calling.
