Matthew 21:42 (NASB)
Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: “‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?
Bible Commentary
Matthew 21:42 is a Bible verse from the New Testament where Jesus is teaching the people but also confronting the chief priests and Pharisees with the truth.
Have you ever had to make a hard decision to do the right thing, knowing it would cost you something? Have you been rejected or shunned by an individual or by an entire group of people?
Jesus faced all those scenarios, and to the extreme. He was the Messiah, the One the Jews had heard about and eagerly waited so long for. And when He finally arrived, the Savior of the world, they spit in His face.
This is what Jesus is referring to in Matthew 21:42 when He quotes the Scriptures, saying “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone;”
Back in Bible days when they wanted to build a structure, they started with a cornerstone, which was the basis for every piece that went into the structure, kind of like using a T-square. The cornerstone acted like an axis.
That’s what Jesus is in the house of God, the cornerstone of every other piece and person that makes up God’s house. He is the One Who is worthy, and we come under the covering of the blood He shed for us.
The chief priests and Pharisees were indignant at Jesus’ presumed authority and the influence of His actions. He was famous among the people, and that threatened the thing they held most dear—their own authority and status.
And so they rejected Him. They rejected the cornerstone. They didn’t want to have anything to do with this building, but yet it was the very House of God being raised right in front of their eyes!
