Bible Commentary

Genesis 22:17 is a Bible verse from a famous story where God is blessing Abraham for his willingness to offer God his only son.

It’s a famous Bible story. Abraham and Sarah had waited so long for the fulfillment of God’s promise to them, that they would have a son. Back then, it was an extreme honor to bear children, and particularly sons to carry on the family name.

After a very long wait, Sarah finally conceived in her old age. It was a miracle, but God said it would happen. She and Abraham were overjoyed when Isaac was born. They doted on him and enjoyed him probably more than most parents.

So you can imagine how difficult it must have been for Abraham to hear God’s instruction in Genesis 22:2, “…Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.”

Has God ever asked you to give up something precious to you? Something that made you feel important, something that made you feel secure, something you had waited for and hoped for—a longing fulfilled?

We hope we didn’t hear or understand Him right. This must not be right; we waited so long for this blessing and now He wants me to give it up??
